Wainwright's Coast to Coast 2011: Introduction
Hello reader
Yes, yes i am finally walking the walk after a lot of talking the talk.
I now take the road back on memory lane, and arrive at the day that my ears hear for the first time say the magic words (Coast to Coast walk). That! was almost 24 years ago, in the year 1988.
My cousins Albert-Leen and Thomas had walked the coast 2
coast walk unprepared with gear from the stone age and just
a single guidebook.
There story,s where great there adventure even greater.
Story,s about eating cold food from the can, wandering
around in circles in the fog and fighting the rain dragon.
You can understand as a Young bloke and already commencing on my own little adventures that my blood was starting to boil and that i myself also wanted to undertake that same walk.. That was a promise and a dream at once born in 1988...
So I trained a bit found some walking partner collected some gear, but you know how it goes friends disappear from your rader screen. you get called by the army and suddenly you are in a green army adventure. you finally get out of that mudpooland you start your own business. and before you know it time has passed plans in the drawer and forgotten. no time no money no walking buddy no gear and more of those excuses.
Well last year April 25th (call it my birthday) I decided that i would wait no longer that this dream! This adventure must be undertaken and no more turning back. So i booked a boat trip almost a year in advance payed for it, and if i don't go well money gone!
I spend almost a year with buying new gear, my old gear was just? um well! pre stone age i guess?. So almost everything i have is brand new and more expensive then i ever would expected it to be.
My guide for all the planning was a 2e edition Wainwright guide and later i found a Stedman 2e edition guidebook. The big issue i noticed a bit to late was that the prices where about twice as high as that i calculated using the old guidebooks. So i am now only eating things like frogs, and wild bunny's to save some money. (just kidding about that).
So all the problems overcome and a lot of time to make the walk a long successful adventure. I have 21 days total and have given myself some extra time in the lake district to wander around and take it easy and extra time to travel to the starting point and back. I have not done this because i am a slow walker i am more likely to run to the other coast. but i just forced myself to take my time and enjoy as much as i can. I waited long enough so i wand this to last as long as possible.
So far my introduction to Wainwright's Coast 2 Coast
walk.
A walk that starts in St.Bees at the Irish Sea and will
bring me through 3 great national parks ending after 310km
in Robin Hoods Bay at the North sea.
